August 24, 2021 — A lawsuit has been filed by a woman who claims that the lid on her Instant Pot pressure cooker is defective.
The lawsuit was filed by Sondra S. D., a woman from Illinois who was burned while using her Instant Pot in July 2019.
According to the complaint, she was able to easily rotate and open the lid on her Instant Pot while the unit was still pressurized.
Doing so caused “its scalding hot contents to be forcefully ejected” out of the pressure cooker and onto her body, resulting in “serious and substantial burn injuries.”
She blames the incident on the failure of the Instant Pot’s so-called “safety features” — specifically, a lid that was supposed to lock and prevent her from opening it until the pressure was safely released.
Instant Brands Inc. is accused of misleading consumers about the safety of the Instant Pot.
For example, the owner’s manual claims: “As a safety feature, until the float valve drops down the lid is locked and cannot be opened.”
Her lawsuit joins a growing number of similar lawsuits involving people who were burned when their defective pressure cookers exploded.
The case was filed on July 16, 2021 against Instant Brands Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois — Case Number 3:21-cv-3159.
