May 30, 2023 — A lawsuit has been filed on behalf of a 4-year-old boy who was burned when a Power Quick Pot Pressure Cooker exploded when his mother opened the lid.
The lead plaintiff, Jennifer R., filed the lawsuit on behalf of her son (named only as “C.T.J.”). She claims that he was seriously burned on June 12, 2020 due to a “dangerously defective” pressure cooker.
The incident specifically involved a Tristar Power Quick Pot® 8-in-1 One-Touch Multi-Cooker (Model Number Y6D-36), which is manufactured by Tristar Products Inc.
Her lawsuit accuses Tristar of misleading consumers about the safety features of the Power Quick Pot, especially the “lid locking device” that was advertised to prevent the lid from opening until it was safe.
Instead, she claims that the Power Quick Pot is “unreasonably dangerous” because consumers can easily twist open the lid when there is still a dangerous amount of pressure, heat and steam inside.
Opening the lid under such circumstances can result in the scalding-hot contents blowing out and burning anyone standing nearby — including children. Her son was the victim of this type of tragic kitchen accident.
In the lawsuit, the plaintiff accuses Tristar of failing to warn consumers about the risk, despite numerous complaints to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) about the lid failing to lock as advertised. For example:
March 20, 2015: (“My “Power Pressure cooker” exploded with fire hot chicken soup in it, covering my entire kitchen, hitting m[e] in the head with a piece of chicken, and burning my arm.”)
Her lawsuit was filed on May 12, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida — Case Number 5:23-cv-00129-MCR-MJF.
