April 9, 2024 — A woman who was burned by an Instant Pot has filed a pressure cooker lawsuit against Instant Brands LLC
The lawsuit was filed by Courtney F., a resident of Savannah, Georgia, who blames Instant Brands for selling a defective pressure cooker.
According to the lawsuit, she was severely burned in August 2021 while using an Instant Pot DUO 60 Pressure Cooker (Model IP-DUO60 Plus).
Despite using the pressure cooker normally, she was able to easily twist open the lid while the Instant Pot was still pressurized. This caused the “scalding hot contents to be forcefully ejected,” resulting in her severe burn injuries.
She blames her injuries on “safety features” that failed to work as advertised because they did not lock the lid until it was safe to open.
For example, the Defendants claim that the Instant Pot pressure cookers include a “Safety Lid Lock” which purportedly automatically locks the lid when the unit is pressurized “to prevent opening the cooker.”
Instead, she claims that the Instant Pot DUO 60 is defective because unsuspecting consumers can easily open the lid when the pressure cooker is under pressure, which may result in a dangerous explosion of scalding-hot food, liquid, and steam.
The Instant Pot Lawsuit was filed on March 26, 2024 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Georgia (Savannah Division) — Case Number 4:24:cv-00055-TSF-CLR.
