March 13, 2024 — A man who was burned by hot food that blew out when he opened the lid his Instant Pot has filed a lawsuit.
The lawsuit was filed by Darryl D., a resident of Franklin, Kentucky, against the Florida-based manufacturer, Midea America Co.
He accuses the company of selling dangerously defective pressure cookers with lids that do not lock until the pressure cooker is safe to open.
According to the lawsuit, he was burned in March 2023 by an Instant Pot DUO 6-Quart Electric Pressure Cooker (model DUO 60 V3). When he opened the lid, pressure remaining inside the pot caused “its scalding hot contents to be forcefully ejected from the pressure cooker.”
He claims that Midea America Co. misled him and other consumers by advertising the safety features of the Instant Pot DUO.
His lawsuit quotes statements in the Owner’s Manual, such as: “Once enough steam has built up inside the inner pot, the float valve pops up and locks the lid of the cooker in place for safe pressure cooking.”
He claims that the Instant Pot DUO is “unreasonably dangerous” for its intended use because consumers can open the lid when the unit is pressurized, resulting in an explosion of hot food, liquid, or steam.
His lawsuit was filed on February 20, 2024 in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey — Case Number 2:24-cv-00954.
