July 15, 2024 — A lawsuit has been filed by a woman from Oregon who claims that Target sold her a defective Instant Pot Pressure Cooker.
The lawsuit was filed against Target, a Minnesota-based corporation, and another company who sells the Instant Pot, Midea America Corp.
The plaintiff, Shayanna B., is a resident of Portland, Oregon, who claims that she suffered substantial burn injuries because she was able to open the lid on her Instant Pot while it was still pressurized.
The incident occurred in August 2022 and involved an Instant Pot Duo Crisp Pressure Cooker that she purchased at her local Target store.
According to her lawsuit, the Instant Pot Duo Crisp is defective and unsafe because “the lid of the pressure cooker is removable with built-up pressure, heat, and steam still inside the unit.”
When she opened the lid, pressure trapped inside the pot caused the scalding-hot food and liquid to be ejected onto her body, resulting in “serious and substantial burn injuries.”
She claims that she was misled into buying the Instant Pot because it was “advertised as convenient and safe and touted for their supposed ‘safety’ features.” She alleges that the safety features are defective.
Her lawsuit was filed on July 11, 2024 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota — Case Number 0:24-cv-02682-PJS-DTS.
