December 6, 2024 — A lawsuit has been filed against the pressure cooker manufacturer Maxi-Matic by a woman who suffered severe 3rd-degree burns, scarring and trauma.
The plaintiff is a woman from Ohio named Letitia A., who was burned when the lid suddenly blew off of a Maxi-Matic Elite Platinum 8-Quart Digital Electric Pressure Cooker (Model #EPC-813) on January 9, 2022.
In her lawsuit, she accuses Maxi-Matic of selling pressure cookers that are “unreasonably dangerous” because the safety features can fail to prevent the lid from opening while the unit is pressurized.
The incident occurred at her mother’s house in Michigan. She was standing just a few feet away from her Maxi-Matic Pressure Cooker when the lid opened unexpectedly, which released the built-up pressure and ejected boiling-hot food, liquid, and steam out of the pot.
According to her lawsuit “the lid of the pressure cooker suddenly exploded and boiling hot contents ejected onto her face, neck, arms, shoulders, torso and right foot.”
Her face and body were immediately covered in scaling-hot food and liquid, which resulted 2nd-degree and 3rd-degree burns.
She was rushed to a local hospital, but had to be transferred to another hospital in Detroit with a specialized Burn Center. For the next three months, she also underwent extensive follow-up care at another hospital in Ohio.
Tragically, her injuries were so severe that she is still suffering from scarring, disfigurement and trauma — “permanent physical scars and disfigurement in addition to significant emotional scars, from which she will never fully recover,” according to her lawsuit.
The lawsuit was filed on November 20, 2024, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan (Southern Division) — 2:24-cv-13076-DPH-KGA.
